A Guide to Installation of a Dummy Dumbwaiter

A dumbwaiter system is one that is used to increase the speed of moving goods or people up and down a stairs. It is usually fitted onto a staircase either vertically or horizontally. This type of elevator can also be called a vertical elevator. The track or path of the dumbwaiter system generally follows a path along the length of the staircase.

There are three important components of the industrial dumbwaiters system; the hoist (which raises and lowers the object), the track (which holds and transport the object) and the motor (which raises, lowers and moves the object). In the vertical elevator, the hoist is on the top of the stairs, while the track is below. In the inclined dumbwaiter system, the track is below and the hoist is at the bottom. In both types of dumbwaiter systems, the object moves through the tracks under the influence of a roller. When the roller is in motion, the rails move beneath the roller and this causes the object to be carried over the rails. In the inclined system, the track is below and the roller is above, so the object is carried over the rail that is parallel to the stairs.

Before installing dumbwaiters, one needs to carefully plan the installation process. The location where the dumbwaiter will be installed should be chosen and the distance from the opening to the entrance of the building should be known. The mounting of the dumbwaiters in vertical shafts is different from that of the inclined dumbwaiter systems. In the former, the installation has to be done on each floor by means of a series of ladders.

Normally the installation process is very simple but care should be taken to avoid obstructions. Cables should be fixed in such a way that they do not interfere with each other and the motor cannot be damaged. One should be careful about the weight of the motor. It is better to use heavy duty motors so that there is less chance of the motor breaking down during use. Also, it is important to install control devices like limit switches in order to stop and start the dumbwaiter system.

One can also install small freight elevators in conjunction with dumb waiters systems. A small freight elevator can be used to carry goods in and out of a warehouse. These can be very useful where space is an issue and where the access to a lower level is difficult. In addition to carrying goods, these dumbwaiters can also be fitted with a counter or a keyboard to display the inventory. Another important component of a dumbwaiter system is the control panel. It controls all the functions of the dumbwaiter and usually contains a monitor and a printer.
